Bushwhack up West Stoppel Point, NE Catskills

Saturday, February 20, 2016

Five of us had a fine 8-mile hike up West Stoppel Point (3100 ft.), near Lake Capra & Colgate Lake in the NE Catskills. This was something new and interesting. The ridgeline summit of this mountain, which lies west of Stoppel Point on the Escarpment Trail, was a really nice walk because the woods are open and there are views of the Blackhead Range when the leaves are off the trees. After we came down, we found a beautiful frozen waterfall on the East Kill, which dumps into Lake Capra. Here’s a picture of it. There’s also a group “selfie” taken on the summit.

Annual Winter Trip to ADKs CCCold

…, but beautiful and fun for the 13 participants. Yes, temps on Sunday were in the negative 20s in the morning, and most of the group set a minimum temp of minus 5 before they would head outside. Various outings were enjoyed each day, including a little x-country skiing by two of our hardier members, though snow cover was light; hikes from our cabin at Heart Lake to Mount Van Hoevenberg (Saturday) and Rocky Falls (Sunday afternoon); a photo expedition to Cascade Lake; and shopping in Lake Placid.

Thanks go to Pete and Carol McGinnis for organizing the weekend, and to all who brought great food for copious pot-luck dinners on Saturday and Sunday. Plan now to join the outing next year, same time (President’s Day Weekend) and place (ADK’s Wiezel Trails Cabin at Heart Lake).

Tug Hill Offers Snow, as Usual

Jan. 15-18, 2016  X-C Ski Weekend on the Tug Hill Plateau
Leader: Ron Gonzalez
We had to drive 5 hours to get to a place where there was enough snow to ski, but it was worth it.  The lake-effect snow machine off of Lake Ontario almost always guarantees terrific ski conditions.  We skied at Barnes Corners, Osceola Tug Hill X-C Ski Center and Winona Forest.  We stayed at very nice lodging and had wonderful pot-luck meals.
