Fri, Jan 12 to Mon, Jan 15 – MLK Weekend XC Ski in the West-Central ADKs
Adirondack Park near Old Forge, NY. – Nordic Backcountry Skiing
Leader: Ron Gonzalez – iamrongon@gmail.com
For this season’s MLK Weekend outing we’ll be staying near Old Forge, NY in the West-Central Adirondacks, looking to ski rolling-to-hilly terrain in the Great Forest of the Adirondacks. There are plenty of nice woods roads and designated Nordic backcountry ski trails in the Ha-De-Ron-Dah and Pigeon Lake Wilderness areas which can be used for everything from short jaunts to all day ski tours. The area is scenic enough that even if we don’t get good snow, we can still enjoy hiking to the numerous lakes, ponds and streams sprinkled throughout the area. However, the western half of the Adirondack Park gets significantly more snow than the eastern half, so I’m hopeful we’ll have good conditions for skiing. The activities will be moderate to strenuous, requiring advanced-level cross country ski skills. You should definitely be comfortable skiing the black diamond (Advanced) trails at any Nordic center. The skiing will be beyond intermediate-level. The terrain we’ll be skiing is not truly mountainous, but it is still quite hilly. The trails vary from well graded dirt roads to winding, narrow hiking trails. Of course conditions are everything, so we’ll be choosing our destinations to match snow conditions. There are no major Nordic centers in the area, although there are groomed XC ski trails in a park near Inlet, which is just down the road from Old Forge. Accommodations and meals will need to be secured by the individual participants. Contact the leader for more information (see below). Required equipment will include a backcountry-worthy (classic-technique) cross country ski setup, preferably with skis with metal edges and warm, sturdy XC ski boots. (If the snow is soft, plain-edged skis will work well, but if the snow is hard and/or icy, metal edged skis become necessary.) Proper ski poles, clothing and a day pack with hip belt and sternum strap will be needed to carry your lunch and trail snacks, water, ski wax, first aid and personal items, extra clothing, and so on. To Register: Contact leader (Ron) at iamrongon@gmail.com. You can also send an email with any questions about gear, etc., or for more information on this trip.

We’ll meet at the Stop and Shop in Hopewell Junction, then drop off one or two cars at the finishing area, then carpool to the starting trailhead (about 10 minute drive). Should be fun. As usual we’ll try to stick together. Microspikes required, probably snowshoes also required so please bring them just in case. Please register with leader.

Thu, Jan 18 to Sun, Jan, 21 – Fawn Lake/Snowy Mountain – Introduction to Winter Backpacking in the Adirondacks near Piseco NY. – 18 miles – Hiking Class A
Leader: David Mong davidcmong@gmail.com
Fawn Lake is a large, scenic lake located completely on state lands in Jessup River Wild Forest.   An easy 0.5 mile trail leads to the eastern shore of the lake, where there are primitive campsites.  Another trail, the Willis Vly Trail (which is also a snowmobile trail) loops around the north end of the lake.  The lake is located near Speculator and the Moffitt Beach State Campground.
The trailhead for Snowy Mountain is on NY 30 south of the town of Indian Lake, just to the north of Lewey Lake State Campground.  It is a hike of about 3.8 miles one way with an elevation gain of over 2000 feet.
This trip is suitable to those with limited winter camping experience who want to learn how to improve their skills to climb larger mountains further into the wilderness.  We are camping in the same spot for 3 nights not far from cars to make it easier to both get out if needed and to drive to Snowy to provide instruction on the use of ice axes, crampons and hiking on steep terrain.  One day will be to climb Snowy and one day to do a woods walk in the area of Fawn Lake.  Here is a gear list to refer to:  https://amc-ny.org/backpacking-gear-lists/Required gear includes boots with removable insulation, a sleep system rated to at least -20, snowshoes, ice ax & crampons along with a bear canister or Ursack.  Contact leaders for more information or to ask to join the group.

Sat, Jan 27 – BACKCOUNTRY SKI WEEKEND IN VERMONT 9:00 AM EST
Leader: Ron Gonzalez, iamrongon@gmail.com
Join us for a winter weekend of downhill-oriented backcountry skiing in the Green Mountains of Vermont. Please register by sending an email to both the leader and co-leader.
Saturday we plan to ski the Brandon Gap ski trail network, which is managed and maintained by the Ridgeline Outdoor Collective and the Catamount Trail Association. The area’s not deep in the wilderness, but there are nice woods on scenic mountains with challenging terrain. The Ridgeline trails are really popular, and for good reason—they offer classic Green Mountains backcountry skiing with easy access. Meeting time is Saturday morning will be 9:00am. The outing should last about six hours. Sunday is a free day where you can choose to ski at any of a number of downhill ski resorts (Sugarbush, Mad River Glen, Middlebury Ski Bowl, Bolton Valley, Magic Mt, Killington, etc.) or Nordic centers (Bolton Valley Nordic, Rikert XC, Blueberry Hill, etc.). Participants must obtain their own lift ticket or trail pass for Sunday. The Brandon Gap trails have well organized and maintained ‘backcountry ski zones’ with marked up-tracks and thinned-out glades for downhill skiing. Admission and parking are free. Participants must have their own backcountry ski equipment (Alpine Touring, Telemark or Splitboard) with climbing skins (required). The ability to link turns and stop on steep terrain is mandatory. The trails would be rated ‘black diamond’ (Advanced) at ski resorts, because they are fairly steep, have trees in the way, and the snow is not groomed. If conditions are icy or hard-packed then the rating bumps up to double-black (Expert). Participants will need to be prepared for a full day out in the backcountry, with a backpack with room for extra clothes, gloves, personal items, trail lunch, water, and room for your climbing skins for the ski down. A helmet and goggles/sunglasses are required. Participants must book their own accommodations. There are AirB&B, Vrbo, motels and B&B’s in the area. The closest town is Brandon, but you can also find accommodations near Rochester, along VT-100 north of Killington, or in Middlebury. There is no public transportation to these areas. Participants will need to arrange their own transportation or arrange ride-shares with other participants.

Sat, Jan 27 – Short (C) walk at Roosevelt Woods in Hyde Park; 2.5-3 miles down and back from and to visitor’s center. Participants MUST have spike traction (ie, Microspikes).

Sages Ravine is a natural wonder nestled along the extreme western border of MA, near CT. It’s a picturesque gorge with a beautiful hemlock forest and rock formations. The forest is dark with sunlight splicing through the trees. When there’s abundant water, as in this time of year, the falls and cascades are breathtaking. (2316′) loop, with a very steep initial ascent up the highest summit in CT for an 8 to 9 mi. RT. We’ll also climb 2296-ft. Round Mtn. (~5 mi. RT), then decide whether to also tag the Mt. Thu, Sep 12 – Interpretive Hike about the American Beaver at the Cary Institute
Leader: Sharon Klein, CatsNGunks@gmail.com

Join Cary Institute Wildlife Biologist Mike Fargione at 10 AM on Sept. 12 (rain date) 9/26) for an interpretive hike where we explore the ecology and management of one of nature’s ecosystem engineers, the American beaver. Using examples found on the Cary 2000-acre property, we will interpret how beavers have shaped past and current landscapes, explore the rich biodiversity of beaver ponds, and see examples of the conflicts that arise when beavers reestablish themselves in areas now occupied by humans. The event will combine moderately easy walks on paved roads and some unpaved, uneven terrain, with car hopping to different parts of the property. We will meet at the Cary parking area on the east side of Route 82 (41.792555399787496, -73.75495350439687, across Route 82 from the Cary greenhouse complex; 0.7 miles north on Route 82 from the junction of 82 and US Route 44 in Washington Hollow, NY). Fri, Sep 20 to Mon, Sep 23 – Kayaking/Basecamp on Stockport Middle Ground, Hudson River
For experienced “Big Water” paddlers; Short paddle to basecamp; Day paddles of 10 to 11 mi. RT
Leader: Russ Faller 845-297-5126 (before 9 PM) or russoutdoors@yahoo.com
Camping on Stockport Middle Ground, an island created by dredge spoil during channel deepening in the 1930s & 40s, is a lot of fun. You’ve got sandy beaches from which to launch your kayak or take a swim. The island is a wild oasis surrounded by the thriving villages of Coxsackie, Athens and the city of Hudson. The island has not been touched by what Edward Abbey has called “syphilis-ation”. It has become a jungle, where the original herd paths have been obliterated by vines and brush. But you can still take a walk around the island on its sandy beach at low tide. From our basecamp, we’ll take day paddles:

  1. North to explore the ruins of the largest 19th c. ice house on the river, then cross the river to circumnavigate Rattlesnake Island. Landing at Coxsackie, we’ll enjoy lunch at a waterfront restaurant before crossing back to our campsite.
  2. South to Hudson, NY, and the island of Middle Ground Flats, the Athens-Hudson Lighthouse and into the south marsh. We might include Athens. We’ll land at the well-designed kayak ramp at the Henry Hudson Riverfront Park, in Hudson, for lunch at a riverfront restaurant. On our way back to our campsite, we’ll duck into a marsh or two on the north side of Hudson.
  3. East up Stockport Creek to a cascade then into Stockport Marsh. This is a short paddle we can do on Friday or Monday.

Campsite facilities include an outhouse, fire ring and picnic table, but no lean-to. You’ll need to bring all camping gear, stove, cooking gear, 3 breakfasts, 1 lunch, 3 dinners, snacks & jugs of drinking/cooking water. PFDs must be worn while on the water. A spray skirt is highly recommended. A bilge pump & extra paddle can also be useful. Wear water shoes/sandals with toe protection and secure fittings. Sunhat, sun screen, paddling gloves, appropriate clothing and rain gear are essentials. We’ll gather mid-morning a few miles north of Hudson, NY. Time and directions will be sent to confirmed participants. If you have questions or want to register, contact the leader (above).

Sun, Sep 22 – Paddle the Esopus Creek in search of the Saugerties Seal
Leader: JeanetteTB, jeanettetb.ny@gmail.com
 and co-leader Jonathan Baker
I’ve heard it’s guaranteed to see the Saugerties Seal if you paddle in the lower Esopus. So we’ll paddle from the dam to the lighthouse, back and forth, until we see him! Boats can be any size. PFD required. Bring your cameras!! Must confirm with leader for meeting place and time. Group size is limited.

Mon, Sep 23 to Fri, Sep 27 – West Canada Lakes Wilderness: Exploring Muskrat Lake & Indian Lake – Inlet NY
Hike Rating B

Leaders: David Mong davidcmong@gmail.com and Bob Coia rjcoia@yahoo.com
The 168,920-acre West Canada Lake Wilderness is the second largest wilderness in the Adirondack Forest Preserve. Although many foot trails penetrate the interior, parts are trackless, making it one of the more remote areas in the Adirondack Park. Our out and back route over 5 days totals 16 miles with 1,400′ of elevation gain/loss.  This is a very remote area where we are unlikely to see other hikers.  We did most of this route last year but part is a scouting trip for the leader.  Contact the leader for more information and required gear.

Hike Rating A

Leaders: David Mong davidcmong@gmail.com and Bob Coia rjcoia@yahoo.com
The Ha-De-Ron-Dah Wilderness contains 26,600 acres and is located in the western foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, west of the hamlet of Old Forge and the Fulton Chain of Lakes and east of Independence River Wild Forest. While not the grandeur of a “High Peaks” wilderness experience, Ha-De-Ron-Dah has plenty to offer for those seeking solitude within the Adirondack Forest Preserve. Its proximity to urban areas however, makes the unit of priceless value to those who treasure wilderness, rarely seeing another person and well worth the effort to explore the miles of trails. Join us as we explore the marked & lightly maintained trails in this wilderness area.  The northern part of the loop is marshy, without bridges and is hard to follow according to the guidebook.  15+ miles depending on side trips to nearby attractions with minimal elevation gain/loss.  This is a scouting trip for the leader who has only been on parts of this route.  Contact the leader for more information and required gear.

Fri, Dec 13 to Sun, Dec 15 – Introduction to Winter Hiking & Camping in PA
Leaders: David Mong davidcmong@gmail.com & Bob Coia
For those with some previous warm weather hiking and camping experience we have created a two night program at a large group campsite at Hickory Run State Park in White Haven PA to get one on one help learning how to camp out in cold weather and combine it with hiking from that cold weather location. This will help those folks interested in starting the transition to winter backpacking. If instead you already have winter experience feel free to join us for winter camping fellowship and organized group hiking from that cold weather campsite.
While we will be camped near our cars, there is no other heated space. There are vault toilets without running water. All of our activities will take place outdoors. No alcohol is allowed.
There is no cost for the program but participants will need to provide all of their own hiking and camping equipment along with food. We have some gear available to loan out and we will be able to share some gear like winter stoves. The exact gear needed will depend on the weather but you can think about needing to have a sleep system rated to zero degrees. This can be achieved with a combination of pads and multiple sleeping bags. No one will be allowed to attend if we don’t think you have the gear to stay warm enough. Expect to be contacted by one of the leaders for a detailed review of what you will be bringing. This program is open to families with youth 16 and up as long as they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Contact the leader for more information or to register.
