2025 Previous Outing Schedules

Fri, Jan 3 to Sun, Jan 5, 2025 – Introduction to Winter Hiking & Camping in PA
Leaders: David Mong davidcmong@gmail.com & Bob Coia
For those with some previous warm weather hiking and camping experience we have created a two night program at a large group campsite at Hickory Run State Park in White Haven PA to get one on one help learning how to camp out in cold weather and combine it with hiking from that cold weather location. This will help those folks interested in starting the transition to winter backpacking. If instead you already have winter experience feel free to join us for winter camping fellowship and organized group hiking from that cold weather campsite. While we will be camped near our cars, there is no other heated space. There are vault toilets without running water. All of our activities will take place outdoors. No alcohol is allowed. There is no cost for the program but participants will need to provide all of their own hiking and camping equipment along with food. We have some gear available to loan out and we will be able to share some gear like winter stoves. The exact gear needed will depend on the weather but you can think about needing to have a sleep system rated to zero degrees. This can be achieved with a combination of pads and multiple sleeping bags. No one will be allowed to attend if we don’t think you have the gear to stay warm enough. Expect to be contacted by one of the leaders for a detailed review of what you will be bringing. This program is open to families with youth 16 and up as long as they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Contact the leader for more information or to register.

Catskills, Hunter Mtn. Fire Tower

The Hunter/West Kill Wilderness is a high elevation East-West ridge.  Rusk Mtn’s. elevation is 3,680.  SW Hunter Mtn’s. elevation is 3,740 ft.  West Kill Mtn’s elevation is 3,880 ft.  Hunter Mtn’s. elevation is 4,040 ft.  All Catskill High Peaks.  Hunter has the unique distinction of a fire tower that’s located at the highest elevation of any fire tower in NYS.  Hikers can climb to the top for one of the very best views in all of NYS. This wilderness is a rugged mountainous area of more than 19,250 acres.  The terrain is very steep in many places.  Popular Diamond Notch Falls is located near our basecamp – the Diamond Notch Lean-to & tent site.  This beautiful falls drops about 24 ft. in an open-circular rock formation. There are several day-hike possibilities from our basecamp.  They will be chosen depending on the trail conditions, weather forecast and desire of the group.  Expect the day hikes to take most of the day. The hike in, with your overnight backpack or sled, is only 1.2 mi. on a wide, gently-graded trail. The leader has a sled and some gear to loan.  Contact him if you don’t have something. This is a roving backpack with a large dry camping, small footprint helps. First day is the hardest; just over 2 miles ‘ up an old road that isn’t always there, about 1800 ft. Camping off trail at Samuels Point. The area is listed as class 3 on the dark sky map. The Milky Way rises around 10:30. If the skies are clear we should have a good view. From there we head to Cross Mountain trail and another campsite along the way. Though campsites will depend on weather conditions. Lots of options in the area and a fun place to wander and dawdle. Then finally a bushwack down to the parking. Bear canisters or Ursacks needed as unlikely to find good spots to hang. Be able to carry 3 liters of water. Ticks are out and likely black flies in May- headnets and bug repellant.  Car pooling is a must as limited parking and limited group size. Contact leader for time and place. (NOTE- no phone contact between 4/29 and 5/6.) Thunderstorms or high winds cancel.

Leader: Linda Horton, text (845) 548-2198 to register include name & contact info
This is a joint paddle with Kayaking the Liquid Skies Meetup group.
Launch at 11:00 am to make high tide at Ramshorn Creek. PLEASE ARRIVE EARLY ENOUGH TO GET YOURSELF READY. We head North and will cross over on the Hudson to Ramshorn-Livingston Sanctuary (a tidal creek) that winds through for about a mile. Many bird species as well as beaver and other wildlife frequent this area. We’ll stop for lunch and a break. The takeout is a small dock. We’ll help each other get out on the dock & move the boats out of the way. We can have lunch & check out the observation tower. On our way back south we’ll cross over to our side and go into the Roeliff Jansen Kill, a major tributary of the Hudson that was the traditional boundary between the Native American Mahican and Wappinger tribes. Roeliff Jansen Kill is less than 2 miles from the launch, so if you’re tired you can always go directly back to Lasher Park. Total distance to be covered approximately 10 miles. Kayaks must be 14′ minimum, no SOT’s, Inflatables, surf ski’s ok. You should know how to assist/self rescue and be able to paddle 10+ miles at a pace. Everyone is responsible for themselves. The Hudson can get choppy at times, know your limitations. PFDs must be fastened and worn. Launch site for GPS: Ernest Lasher Memorial Park, Anchorage Rd, Germantown, NY, 11:00 am in the water.

This is a joint outing with Riverkeeper and AMC.
Time: 10 AM -2 PM (or however long you can stay).
Wappinger Creek near the Falls

The lower Wappinger Creek is one of our favorite paddling locations.  Unfortunately, it does get littered with plastic containers and other litter of all sorts.  Paddlers are closest to the water, so who else will pick up the floating trash?  No one.  It’s up to us.  So, please come out for this service project.  Boats of all kinds are welcome.  If you do not have a boat, you can pick up litter at the vest pocket park at the launch.  If you know how to paddle, but do not have a boat, contact the leader.  He may be able to loan you a canoe. PFDs must be worn properly while on the water.  Bring water shoes, boating gear, lunch and water.  Wear clothes that can either get wet or even somewhat dirty. We’ll meet at 10 AM at the Wappingers Creek boat launch, 121-129 County Road 91, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590.  (Use this address for Google Maps Driving Directions.)  We’ll work until 2 PM, then retire to the Obercreek Brewery in Hughsonville for  refreshments and socializing.  I expect that each volunteer will get a coupon for a free brew.  Please reply to the leader so that he knows who will be coming.

Join us as we kayak/canoe the beautiful marsh of the Bashakill Wildlife Management Area in Wurtsboro, N.Y. Bring lunch/water.  PFD’s must be worn while on the water (zipped and tightened).  All kayaks must have flotation in both front and back. Space is limited; ADK members have priority. This outing is designed for both experienced backpackers and beginners with solid day hiking skills. Our campsite will be on the Neversink River, but will not have a shelter. You’ll need all the required gear on the 3-Season List at www.amc-ny.org/backpacking-gear-lists. The leader has a few items to loan out. Each participant should be well equipped. Mileage: 45 – 47; Strenuous
Leader: Russ Faller, 845-297-5126 (before 9 PM) or russoutdoors@yahoo.com

This outing is joint with the Appalachian Mtn Club.

Adirondacks, Upper Raquette Falls

This is a paddling/camping trip along an iconic Adirondack route, with a new twist. From Long Lake Village, we’ll head north on the Raquette River. Rather than stop at the usual landing (Moody’s on Tupper Lake), we’ll continue north the length of Raquette Pond and across the Piercefield Flow. There are only 2 portages: 1.3 miles at Raquette Falls and 250 yards at Setting Pole Dam. Longest paddling day will be 10 miles. Shortest paddling day will be 5 miles. While a canoe is preferred, it is possible to use a kayak. (A kayak just makes portaging more difficult.) Paddling gear must include an extra paddle and PFD, which must be worn and zipped while on the water. Boats and gear can be rented locally. For camping, refer to the required 3-season gear list at www.amc-ny.org/backpacking-gear-lists.
You’ll need to arrive at Long Lake by evening Wednesday, July 16th. We’ll gather early on Thursday morning at the Long Lake State Boat Launch to complete the car shuttle and still have time to paddle to the northern end of Long Lake. Options for Wednesday night include:
1. Lake Eaton Public Campground, Rt.30, Long Lake. Six people per campsite, so a site can be shared by others in our group. Reservations will need to be made. Those interested in this option should tell the leader at the time of registration.
2. If you can sleep in your vehicle, you can sleep at the Long Lake State Boat Launch. Bathrooms are on site.
3. Area motels or the Adirondack Hotel on Long Lake.
If interested, contact the leader by phone or email.

Tue, Jul 22 – MHADK Fundraiser: Screening of “Granite Rapids Moon” at the Rosendale Theater
This is a fundraiser for the Mid-Hudson ADK
Beat the heat and come to the Rosendale Theater on Tuesday, July 22 at 7:00pm for a screening of the film “Granite Rapids Moon”, followed by a Q&A with the film’s writer/director Kenneth Cran.
This is the first narrative feature film ever shot with the majority of its footage inside the Grand Canyon. Granite Rapids Moon was made with permission and oversight from the National Park Service, using only the equipment that cast and crew could backpack in through 82 miles of hiking. In other words, they made the film while ‘leaving no trace’.
It’s a family-friendly movie and the filmmakers are donating a portion of the proceeds for this show to the Mid-Hudson ADK chapter. So let’s pack the house. See you at the movies!
Questions? Contact Annette Caruso at annettecrs@gmail.com.

Sat, Jul 26 – Paddle the Fishkill Creek, Dutchess County, NY
Leader: Russ Faller 845-297-5126 (before 9 PM) or russoutdoors@yahoo.com

Fishkill Creek

The Fishkill Creek is a paddlers paradise in our suburban world. It’s an easy paddle yet you feel as if you’re far away from overdevelopment. There are a lot of stretches that have no buildings, just trees and undergrowth. In past years, our Chapter was clearing the Fishkill Creek with hopes of creating a water trail from Fishkill Village to Hopewell Jct. Mother Nature did not like this idea. She sent us a microburst that knocked down an overwhelming number of big trees to clog the creek. We valiantly attempted to have our way and tried to clear her mess. But we were no match for Mother Nature. Our few volunteers, with our feeble saws, eventually gave up. But I know that rivers can eventually clean themselves out with water surges. A paddler reported that he and his friend managed to paddle through the area of the microburst. I’ve looked at the creek from several locations and the downed trees I remember are not there. So, let’s do an exploratory paddle on the creek to see for ourselves. You’ll not be asked to do any work. We’ll launch at Fishkill Village and paddle upstream to see how far we can go. The current should not be too hard to paddle against. Paddlers will need only minimal skills. Canoes and any kind of kayak can be used. Bring an extra paddle, sunscreen and hat, something to eat and 2 qts. of fluid. PFDs must be worn, and zipped, while on the water. There’ll be an optional apres-paddle ice cream social at Cold Stone Creamery in Fishkill. Contact leader for meeting time and place.

Sun, Aug 3 – Vly & Bearpen (Catskills)
Leader: Lyn W., adk46erlynw@gmail.com
This is a joint hike with the Catskill 3500 Club.
Level 2 B+ Moderately Strenuous, 6.5 miles with 2,000′ elevation gain.
We will summit two Catskill 3500 peaks, with a rich history and beautiful views. The summit of Vly has a canister notebook that we will sign and the route is considered trailless, one of 14 high peaks in the Catskills that is not officially marked. Bearpen is a now defunct ski area from the 1960’s, started by a Princeton undergrad and forced to close due to a land dispute. It has some remnant rope tow machinery on the summit and beautiful views of the Schoharie Reservoir.

Thu, Aug 7 to Sun, Aug 10 (optional stay to Aug 11) – Introduction to Canoe Camping, Northern Adirondacks, Base Camp with Day Paddles
Leader: Rich Cerruto assisted by Izumi Cerruto r_cerruto@yahoo.com
Limit : 8 participants total (including leaders)
This is a trip for both experienced and first-time canoe campers.  It’s an opportunity to learn water navigation, portaging, and enjoy remote water-front camping without having to carry all your gear on  your back.   On Day 1 we will meet at 1:00 PM at the Follensby Clear Pond Access (Rt. 30 at Moss Rock Rd.) and launch at 2:00 PM. We’ll paddle about one hour and make camp at one of the pristine DEC campsites on Follensby Clear Pond.  We will remain at the same site for the duration.
Typically we are 2 persons per canoe however one person per boat is possible if  you have the right boat.  If you are a single we may be able to pair you up with another single.
Each day we will launch at 8:30 – 9:00 AM, paddle 4-6 hours and return to camp by 3:00 PM.  To participate you need to be able to get up and get out on time based on the leader’s schedule. There are no showers however the water will be warm enough to swim each day.  The toilet consists of an outhouse.  Weather is unpredictable in the Adirondacks and navigation can be tricky so a gear list will be provided and enforced.  Among other things participants must have full body rain gear, a map, a bear bag/canister and a life jacket.  Cooking is on-your-own using your own gas stove.  It is possible to bring in firewood and cook on the fire.  You will pack your own lunch each day.  You will filter lake water to drink or bring in jugs from home.
On Day 2 – Day 3 – we will do day paddles which we’ll decide the day before based on weather and ability.  We will also do short portages up to 360 meters so as to explore some of the more remote ponds in the area.
On Day 4 (Aug 10) we will do a morning paddle and return to the put in location.
Optional Day 5 based on what folks (including leader) want to do.
Canoes can be rented from Raquette River Outfitters or St. Regis Canoe Outfitters

Participants must arrive on Oct. 17 Friday evening
Leader: Russ Faller 845-297-5126 (before 9 PM) or russoutdoors@yahoo.com
This is a joint event with AMC.

PA, Old Loggers Path View

The Old Loggers Path is a beautiful 27-mile backpacking loop in the Loyalsock State Forest of Pennsylvania’s Endless Mountains region.. You can expect solitude, sightings of wildlife (including white-tailed deer, bear, various bird & animal species), rare wetland plants (e.g. Cotton-grass Poor Fens, Pitcher Plants), rugged beauty, waterfalls and vistas into the McIntyre Wild Area and the wider Loyalsock region.
Because the OLP is crisscrossed with other well-defined trails and dirt roads the route can be customized. We’ll be doing a 23-mile version. Daily mileages will range from 3.8 to 7.5. Much of the trail will follow old railroad grades, but there will also be typical hiking trails. There will be ascents (often short) and plateau-type hiking. Camping will be primitive. There will be no shelters or privies.
On the day of arrival (Friday, Oct. 17), we’ll camp at the backpackers’ site in Masten. This campsite has a latrine, but no shelter. You can either tent or sleep in your vehicle. Masten was a lumber company town between 1905 & 1930, with houses, a general store, post office and hotel. Now it’s a ghost town.
If interested, contact the leader. If you have not backpacked with him before, he will contact you to ask a few questions to see if this backpack is a good fit for you.
If you’d like a list of required gear, go to www.amc-ny.org/backpacking-gear-lists. Check out the required gear for 3-season backpacks. The leader might have some gear to loan out.

Fri, Nov 7 – West Point Foundry Preserve and Putnam History Museum, Cold Spring
Hike level C, easy 3-mile walk
Leader: Georgette Weir, gwmhadk@gmail.com
A mile and half of trails wander through this outdoor museum and National Historic Landmark where, as Scenic Hudson notes, in the 19th century, ironworks manufactured “some of America’s first steam engines, locomotives, pipes for New York City’s water system and cannons that helped win the Civil War. Trails pass remains of foundry buildings and interpretive features that tell the story of the site’s contribution to the Industrial Revolution and the Civil War, as well as the land’s astonishing ecological renewal.” There will be some stairs and one or two hills to climb. One leads to an observation deck that looks over Constitution Marsh; the other connects to Chestnut Street, where we will turn to visit the Putnam History Museum (free). The museum features exhibits about the Foundry and events of the American Revolution in the Hudson Valley. From there, we will walk into town, past the train station and back to the preserve and our cars. About 3 miles total. The museum is open 12-4 so our start time will be mid- to late morning. Contact leader for details. Group size limited to 12.

(If below freezing or snow by then microspikes are required). Confirm with leader: Annette Caruso 845 891-3361 annettecrs@gmail.com. 10:30 AM meet at FWP, 996 Dominican Ln, Saugerties, NY 12477. Driving Directions: Off Route 9W or Route 32 south of Saugerties, follow Main St in Glasco NY to Delaware and York. Fri, Nov 14 to Sun, Nov 16 – The Route of Endless Viewpoints, Northern Harriman State Park Level B (Moderate), 14.6 miles
Leader: Russ Faller 845-297-5126 (before 9 PM) or russoutdoors@yahoo.com
This outing is joint with AMC.
On this short backpack, we’ll visit 27 viewpoints! Each one is beautiful in its own way. A photographer’s delight. Daily mileages will be 4.2, 5 & 3.2. There will be steep ascents/descents, as well as easier terrain. We’ll try out the Cornell Mine Trail’s new stone steps on Friday’s ascent. Daylight will be short, with sunsets at ~4:30 PM. Expect to carry water ~1/2 mi. to basecamp at West Mtn. Shelter/tentsite, from where we’ll see NYC’s skyline lit up. This will be a cold weather trip, so warm clothing (including gloves & hat), a cold weather sleeping bag and sleeping pad or mattress that’ll insulate you from the ground, rain gear (that can also serve as a wind block) are essential. Go to www.amc-ny.org/backpacking-gear-lists for a list of cold weather gear. This is a good trip for experienced 3-season backpackers who want to progress to Winter backpacking or sled-packing. We’ll visit the Cornell Mines, dating from before 1859 to 1890. We might also visit Thomas Edison’s ingenious 1890 mine, where electromagnets were used to separate the iron ore from the waste. We’ll also see tunnels of the scenic Dunderberg Spiral Railway, which would haul rail cars up Dunderberg Mountain. by a cable and have them return to the base via gravity. This project began in 1890 and was abandoned (unfinished) in 1891. Investors were spooked by a looming recession and workers rioted. This killed the latest must-do activity for NYC tourists traveling up the Hudson River. Contact the leader if interested in this outing. If you’ve never backpacked with the leader, you’ll be contacted by him to ensure this trip is the right fit for you.

This will help those folks interested in starting the transition to winter backpacking. While we will be camped near our cars, there is no other heated space. There is a portable toilet without running water. There is a pump to get drinking water. All of our activities will take place outdoors. No alcohol is allowed. No pets are allowed. In general for winter backpacking we prepare for -20F weather.
