New Years Day Trip to the Highbridge-NYC

New Years Day Trip to the Highbridge-NYC
Leader: Sue Mackson

Jeff K. and the leader, Sue Mackson, left from Poughkeepsie on Metro North and picked up Ann G. and Marcia W. in Beacon. We traveled to the Harlem/125 Street station and found the bathrooms, unfortunately, closed. We walked West toward Broadway and stopped at Shake Shack for light lunch only because they had public bathrooms for the price of a purchase. At Broadway we took the #1 train north to 168th St and headed for the meeting spot at the Manhattan end of the High Bridge over the Hudson River. Our guide to the history of the bridge and its role in the task of bringing potable to water to New York City was the head of the committee that supervised the restoration of High Bridge which had been closed to the public for decades but reopened in 2015.

We lucked out as the forecast had been overcast skies, but the sun was out by the time we started from the station. Wind was down and the temps were in the low forties. Our guide presented history, expanding on the details in the many historical markers embedded in the surface of the restored bridge. The lecture moved from marker to marker. The history was fascinating. We retraced our route back to Metro North under cloudy skies. Plenty of time to get to know each other during the long rides up and back.
