High Peaks Hiking & Camping

High Peaks Hiking & Camping
Sunday, February 23 to Tuesday, February 25
Leaders: David Mong, Gregg Homeyer & Robert Coia

This was to have been a sled/backpack to the Five Ponds Wilderness at Wanakena NY, but we relocated the trip to try and work around anticipated bad weather. This new location was on the Adirondack Mountain Club property at Heart Lake in the High Peaks of the Adirondacks. We reserved 3 tent campsites and planned to be out 4 nights. We again modified the trip after the second night because of rain in the forecast that made the potential hypothermia risk too high. Our group of 8 found tons of snow to play in and went on a 7 mile snowshoe hike toward Avalanche Lake. The group included 5 Mid-Hudson Chapter leaders. The low temperature noted was 18 degrees with a high in the 40’s with melting snow as we were departing. The large packs in the photos are because we pack in the winter with the idea that someone may get hurt and the group has to stay out overnight. The group included non-member Rich S and members Rich A, Carolyn C, Carmen S, Jeff C with leaders David Mong, Gregg Homeyer & Robert Coia.
