Fri, Mar 27 to Sun, Mar 29 – Introduction to Winter Backpacking in PA
Leaders: David Mong & Bob Coia davidcmong@gmail.com
For those with some previous three season backpacking experience we have created a two night program at a large group campsite at Hickory Run State Park in White Haven PA to get one on one help learning how to camp out in cold weather. This will help those folks interested in starting the transition to winter backpacking. While we will be camped near our cars, there is no other heated space. There is a portable toilet without running water. There is a pump to get drinking water. All of our activities will take place outdoors. No alcohol is allowed. No pets are allowed. There is no cost for the program but participants will need to provide all of their own hiking and camping equipment along with food. We have some gear available to loan out and we will be able to share some gear like winter stoves. The exact gear needed will depend on the weather but you can think about needing to have a sleep system rated to zero degrees. This can be achieved with a combination of pads and multiple sleeping bags. In general for winter backpacking we prepare for -20F weather. No one will be allowed to attend if we don’t think you have the gear to stay warm enough. Expect to be contacted by one of the leaders for a detailed review of what you will be bringing. This program is open to families with youth 16 and up as long as they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. Contact the leader for more information or to register.

We’ll look for the wild daffodil bloom in the Hopeland Area at Norrie Pt, pretty flat easy trail system that is so short we’ll want to hike a bit more. A short drive from there is the magical Vlei Marsh Preserve, about 2 more miles of easy trails with interesting tree sculptures added to the scenery. Bring a snack or lunch and dress for the weather. Contact leader to sign up.
