Winter Skills Workshop at Massawepie Scout Camp near Tupper Lake
Leaders: David Mong, Bob Coia and Gregg Homeyer

This was the second of our winter skills workshops at Massawepie Scout Camp this winter. We had just enough people in the group to divide up into a snowshoeing section of 5 and cross-country skiing section of 4. We had 3 days of activities for each group. On the first morning it was well below zero so we delayed the start so it was a little warmer. Both groups stayed on camp property and headed counterclockwise around part of Massawepie Lake. All travel on the lake was spread out along the edge and we went back onto the White Trail for any streams that entered the lake. The snowshoeing group went to Camp Mountaineer. The cross-country skiing group did the same and also checked out the various snow covered roads. The further objective was to head for Lost Pond which was nearby off trail. On the second activity day, after getting up to see the eclipse before the overcast skies blocked all of the view, the snowshoeing group climbed Goodman Mountain near Tupper Lake. Goodman is one of the three peaks of the Tupper Lake Hike Triad. Leaders Bob and David with others had climbed the other two (Arab & Coney) a month ago on our previous winter workshop. The cross-country skiing group headed to the Deer Pond Loop. On the last activity day, both groups went to Wanakena on Cranberry Lake. The snowshoeing group went to the Moore Trail which follows the Oswegatchie River from Wanakena to Inlet where paddlers put in to head further upstream. We did this as an out and back hike. The cross-country ski group followed the Dead Creek Flow Trail to Janacks Landing Shelter and back. At the Lodge, the facility was great again and we lucked out as a group had just left so it was nice and warm. Low temperature noted was -17 to -21 depending on which thermometer was used. The group had brought lots of food, so we ate well. We are working on plans to go back again in December and February. Group members were ADK members Margaret P, Russ F, Janet P & Ron G, with non-members Dale S & Jerzy S.
