Hike Storm King Mountain via the Esty & Hellie Stowell Trailhead

Leader: John Ragusa
Saturday, March 26

We met in the parking lot of Scenic Hudson’s Esty & Hellie Stowell trailhead in Cornwall-on-Hudson.  The day was overcast with a threat of rain.  There were 9 hikers including the Leader.  A quick history of Storm King Mountain was told near the kiosk. We then started on the Teal trail through a meadow and into the woods. The trail paralleled a brook as we gained quickly in elevation. We then crossed the brook and made our way up to the first scenic point (see photo). We then proceeded on the Yellow Stillman trail through the woods and up a steep ravine hugging the rockface wall and encountering a patch of ice that we circumvented. We then made our way to the top for some really great 360 degree views of the Hudson Valley and had a picnic lunch while it started to drizzle. We then made our way down the Yellow trail where the rain came down harder and then onto the Blue Bird Trail when the sun broke through the clouds, which eventually connected us back onto the Yellow Stillman trail, down the steep trail hugging the creek and back through the meadow and to the end of the trail. All told, we traveled about 4 1/4 miles.  All had a good time, even if a little wet.

Hikers Nancy L, Ann C, Jose A, Connie H, Sue M, Pete C, Jennifer F and Gina R joined leader John Ragusa.
