Ramshorn Livingston Sanctuary, Catskill, NY

Ten paddlers launched into the Hudson River estuary from Dutchman’s Landing in Catskill, NY. Luckily the winds were low and the river was beautifully calm. We paddled into the Catskill Creek and enjoyed the views of the bridges. On our way back we noticed a juvenile Green Heron (thanks for the ID, Lynne!). Once we were back in the Hudson, Lynne spotted a dead bird… with its head in a snapping turtle’s mouth! We kept our fingers out of the river after that. 🙂 There were many lovely native flowers in bloom in Ramshorn Creek, including Joe Pye, Autumn Sneezeweed and Red Cardinal Flower. We made a few wrong turns in the creek, but finally reached the dock, where we rested and enjoyed lunch. We paddled much farther than expected: a total of 7.8 miles!

Paddlers included ADK members Linda W., Jonathan B., Gwen L., Lynne C., John A. and the leader, Jeanette TB. Non-ADK members included Karen B., Marcia W., Rose C. and Rich S.
