Backpack/Basecamp at the Headwaters of the E. Branch of the Neversink River, Catskills
Friday, June 20 to Monday, June 23, 2025
Leader: Russ Faller
We camped for 3 nights in a beautiful and isolated tent site on a ridge far above the E. Branch of the Neversink River, under stately hemlocks. From there we went on day hikes every day, including the day of arrival. We hiked up Table Mtn. to the viewpoint on Friday. Saturday, we bushwhacked the lovely Fisherman’s Path along the E. Branch past Donovan Brook and to the brook up Rocky. We had intentions of doing Rocky & Lone, but by the time we figured out where the herd path is, it was too late. We enjoyed the hike anyway. We were awoken by a 2-hour T-storm, with pouring rain and lightning flashes and explosions too close on Sunday. We cowered in our tents. After the rain subsided, we set out for Slide along the Phoenicia East Branch Trail. Again, we didn’t make our goal and only got as far as the viewpoint along the Curtis-Ormsbee Trail. It was till fun. Monday, we packed up and got to the cars before the blistering heat of the day. It was a very good group. We enjoyed quality social time and became closer to each other, sharing similar interests.
Participants were: Gregg H, John H (both ADK & AMC), Jim C (ADK), Aleksey P (AMC) & the leader, Russ Faller (ADK & AMC).
