Thu, Nov 13 MWH – Fishkill Ridge to Bald Hill and 1945 Plane Crash Site

On Thursday, November 13, 2025, a group of 6 hikers gathered for a challenging and memorable trek in the Fishkill Ridge area, with the goal of visiting the historic 1945 plane crash site on Bald Hill. Spirits were high as we set out, knowing the toughest climb awaited us early in the hike, followed by gentler terrain and scenic vistas. We stopped at all the viewpoints on the way up, finally reaching the Fishkill Ridge Trail.  After a short break, we climbed up to the summit of Lamb Hill for a chilly lunch. After lunch, we descended to Dozer Junction and checked out the discarded bulldozer. Then the best part of the hike, circling Fishkill Ridge between Lambs and Bald Hill with 360 views of the valley and Hudson River, before descending via a woods road.  A poignant highlight of the hike was reaching the site on Bald Hill where, in 1945, a plane crash claimed the lives of six Navy Veterans. Standing at the summit, we reflected on this sobering piece of local history and the enduring legacy of those lost. This hike was as demanding as it was memorable, an experience echoed by several participants. The steep ascent at the start was demanding, but the descent presented its own challenges due to a thick layer of fresh fallen leaves. These slippery conditions increased both physical exertion and the need for caution, especially on the steep sections. The moral of the story: avoid tackling this hike immediately after fresh leaves have fallen. The footing can be treacherous, and the effort required is significantly greater.
