Thu, Nov 20 MWH – Farm Lane to Valkill & Top Cottage
Leader: Lalita Malik
It was a chilly late fall day with mostly cloudy skies and temperatures in the 40s (°F). We gathered for a shuttle hike at Valkill and drove to Farm Lane, our starting Point: Farm Lane trailhead. It was an easy stroll through Hyde Park’s woodland beauty, and onto Valkill, the former home of Eleanor Roosevelt, offering glimpses into American history and peaceful rural scenery. From Valkill, the group ascended to Top Cottage. The trail to Top Cottage provides moderate elevation gain, rewarding hikers with moderate views and a sense of accomplishment. Trails were in good condition, except for a bridge that was broken, but navigable. There some damp patches typical for this time of year, but overall footing was solid and manageable. The shuttle format allowed everyone to enjoy the full route without doubling back. Spirits were high, with plenty of camaraderie and conversation along the way. The historic sites and natural beauty offered frequent points of interest, and the cool weather kept the pace comfortable and refreshing. After the hike, 5 participants joined Lalita at the Apple Pie Bakery. After lunch, we toured the campus and its various restaurants —a perfect way to cap off a memorable day outdoors. Thanks to all who attended and made this cloudy November outing a success! Participants: Arthur G, Katy B, Jean M, Judy, Louise D, Gwen L, Cindy C, Lisa M and Leader Lalita M.
