Sun, Aug 2 – Paddle Constitution Marsh to the Waterfall + Hike/Swim

Seven MHADK paddlers launched into Foundry Cove in Cold Spring a week after the big local floods, somehow not expecting any changes in the water level of the river or the marsh. We were truly surprised to find the water level was super high (we just squeezed under the RR bridge!). We found yet another surprise when we stopped at the waterfall; several huge trees were down, blocking our path to the falls. Some of us climbed over the downed trees to reach the waterfall; others walked around the trees, through the rushing waters. Only two paddlers dared to wade into the pool (really deep)! We then headed to the Audubon Center for lunch but were disappointed that it was closed. Most of the group then hiked to the boardwalk where we saw a muskrat lodge. Launching from the Audubon Center into the marsh was easy this time; the water level was so much higher than usual. We were delighted to find many flowers in bloom; Joe Pye weed, Cutleaf coneflowers, wild morning glories, swamp rose mallow and fragrant honeysuckle. Total distance was about 6 miles. Paddlers included Connie H, Roberta F, Veronica O, Dea M, Eric H, Jonathan B and the leader, Jeanette TB.
