Easy Wildflower Walk in Fern Glen at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies

It was a cool, damp morning, but eleven wildflower lovers met in the Fern Glen at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook. Mike Fargione, Manager of Field Research & Outdoor Programs at Cary, met us and gave a short talk about the Glen and the objectives and history of Cary Institute. We were surprised that not many wildflowers were in bloom; Mike explained that our cold winter probably delayed the flowering. We did see a multitude of skunk cabbage in the wetlands; some had been nibbled by wild turkeys! Nonetheless, we had a lovely stroll through the trails and along the ponds. After our stroll through the glen, some folks headed home while the rest of us hiked the Cary Pines and Wappinger Creek Trails. There were more blooms along the trails than in the Glen! We hiked/walked about 3 miles total. Hikers/walkers included ADK members Ellen Z, Carole M, Judy B, Lalita M, Connie H, Ellen K, Dale H, and the leader Jeanette TB.
