Sun, Sep 14 – Paddle “The Flight of Locks” in the Erie Canal
Leaders: Jeanette TB and Jonathan Baker
We had a large, excited group of 25 ADK and non-ADK members for the paddle through the “Flight of the Locks” in Waterford. Most were looking for a “bucket list” experience, and the paddle did not disappoint! It was a perfect September day; cool and sunny. Everyone gathered early to either pay for their rental boats or prepare their own kayaks for the launch. After the car shuttle setup, we launched into the Mohawk River and paddled toward the locks. We greeted each lockmaster, and peppered them with questions. (“Where does the water go?”) We were surprised to see apples bobbing in the water in lock#4. (They were delicious!). We enjoyed a “waterfall” at the back of one of the locks while waiting for the door to open. After paddling through all 5 locks, we headed upstream toward the dam; it was lovely to be in nature after our time in the concrete canal. Jen’s Alltrails app measured the paddle at over 4 miles with a drop of over 150 feet! It was a fun group of paddlers, including ADK members Sarah R, Lalita M, Jane B, Greg B, Lorraine S, Rick K, Judith R, Connie H, Gwen D, Mark D, Russell L, Louise D, Judy B, Robin S, Diane S, John S, Kay B, Jen S, Mary Jean P, and the leaders Jeanette TB and Jonathan B. Also fun were the ADK guests, including Rosemary D, Marc D, Nancy G and Eleanor C. Photos from Jen S, Jane B, Louise D, Nancy G and Jeanette TB.
